SpectraLIMS
Quality-control LIMS for specialty chemicals

A laboratory information management system demonstrated in a specialty chemicals plant: batch registration against versioned specifications, a fast testing workspace, second-person review, OOS investigations, release decisions and certificates of analysis.

What the demo shows

Highlights

Specifications drive the work

Registering a batch ties it to the product’s effective specification; the release sample receives its tests from that specification automatically.

A testing workspace built for speed

Each test shows its method and acceptance criteria. Results are checked against the specification as they are typed, and only calibrated, in-service instruments can be used.

Out-of-specification handling

A result above its limit opens an OOS investigation automatically and blocks release. Investigation, root cause, invalidation and retest are all on record.

Second-person review

Every result needs a second person — nobody can approve a result they entered.

Release and certificates

Release conditions are checked, the decision is recorded with name and time, and a numbered certificate of analysis is issued as a PDF.

Data integrity throughout

Versioned specifications, instrument calibration tracking, lab analytics with process capability, and an audit trail of who did what, when and why.

This is SpectraLIMS, a laboratory information management system for a specialty chemicals plant. It follows every batch from the reactor to the certificate of analysis and keeps every result traceable. The QA manager starts her day on the dashboard. Samples in the lab, tests waiting for a result, results waiting for review, open out of specification investigations, and batches ready for release, all from live data.

Below, the lab's throughput, the batches still in quarantine, and everything that needs attention today. Production has just finished a batch of Polyol PE330. Registering it ties the batch to the product's effective specification, version 2, and the release sample gets its six tests from that specification automatically. In the lab, an analyst receives the sample.

The turnaround clock starts, and its tests move to the bench. The testing workspace is built for speed. Each test shows its method and acceptance criteria. The result is checked against the specification as it is typed, and Enter saves it and moves on.

Only instruments that are in service and calibrated can be used. This water result is above its limit. The analyst confirms it, and an out-of-specification investigation opens automatically. The batch cannot be released while it is open.

Then, the analyst finishes the remaining tests. Every result needs a second person. The lab supervisor approves the results within specification in one step. Nobody can approve a result they entered, and the one under investigation is decided by the investigation.

QA leads the investigation. It shows the method, the instrument, the analyst, and this parameter on recent batches. The investigator and the probable root cause are recorded with the findings. Phase 1 found a laboratory error, so QA invalidates the result.

It stays on record, and a retest is assigned. The analyst repeats the test. This time, the result is well within specification. The supervisor approves the retest, and the sample is complete.

Now, every release condition is met. The sample received, every test approved and within specification, no open investigation. The QA manager confirms the release statement, and the decision is recorded with her name and the time. For the customer, QA issues a certificate of analysis, a numbered snapshot of the approved results, ready to print or to download as a PDF.

Specifications are versioned. A tighter viscosity range for the acrylic resin is waiting in draft. Once QA approves it, it is effective today, and the old version is superseded, while every batch keeps the version it was tested against. The instrument register tracks calibration.

The overdue colorimeter is blocked for results. Recording its calibration, with the certificate reference, brings it back into service for another year. Lab analytics turn the same data into insight. Right first time, OOS rate, turnaround, workload by technique, and the trend of any parameter with its process capability.

And everything lands in the audit trail. Every registration, result, review, investigation, and release, with who did it, when, and why. SpectraLIMS. From batch to certificate, every result traceable.
